STANDING ATOP THE first known gateway to the Midwest and beyond, the morning’s haze begins to dissipate. From this viewpoint, just shy of 2,500 feet, I can see into three states — that is, when the smokelike clouds aren’t blocking my view.
But peering off into the horizon isn’t the only thing that’s kept me busy during today’s excursion. In fact, in this park you can climb atop a high overlook and hike deep into one of the area’s longest caves. Or, if you’re in the mood to exercise your brain cells, the park boasts a rich history with exhibits on pioneer life and even Civil War-era structures.
