IF YOU’RE LOOKING for a place to test your outdoor skills, I’ve found just the spot. This link of islands requires no passport, but you’ll feel as if you’re worlds away from home.
Our journey begins on a ferry, and we are loaded down with everything we’ll need for the next three days — there’s no drinking water or supplies available where we are headed. The hike begins after the ferry reaches a small strip of land rising from the sea.
It’s hard to stay focused on the trail ahead when you have a view like this one. The ocean surrounds us as a sea breeze keeps us cool, despite the strenuous walking. When we need a break, a dip in the surrounding water refreshes our tired legs.
After several days and 8 miles of trails — including a few ferry rides to jump to the next islands — we find ourselves on a stretch of beach surrounded by seals, sea lions and pelicans as we watch blue whales spout on the horizon. This is a sight you can’t miss. WHERE AM I? – Gretchen Sparling
